Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, 31, was a first-year nursing student. She was the oldest of the 14 victims. Klucznik-Widajewicz and her husband, high school sweethearts, had moved to Montreal from Poland in 1987. A trained economist, she decided to make a career change as her husband, a Polish-trained physician, worked toward his Canadian qualifications. The couple was in the cafeteria of the engineering school that night because it was the cheapest place to eat on campus. Her husband, who wasn’t injured in the shooting, said they had both believed Canada was the safest place in the world. (courtesy of CBC)
